A memorial was planned Friday for a 1st Armored Division soldier, one of three division soldiers killed this week in Iraq.

The ceremony for Staff Sgt. Chris Swanson, 25, of Rose Haven, Md., was scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Friday at Good Samaritan Chapel on H.D. Smith Barracks in Baumholder.

Swanson died last Saturday, shot by a sniper as he led his squad on a foot patrol in Ramadi.

Swanson was assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment.

According to media reports from his hometown, Swanson served with the 82nd Airborne Division in Kosovo, then was part of the initial Iraq ground war in March 2003.

At the time of his death, he had been awarded two Purple Hearts, according to media accounts.

Military officials announced Monday that two soldiers assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division, had been killed. They have not yet been identified.
