BAMBERG, Germany — A fallen 54th Engineer Battalion noncommissioned officer was remembered Tuesday in a ceremony at the Warner Barracks chapel.

Scores of soldiers, family members and friends of the 54th and the Bamberg military community attended, paying their respects to Sgt. Alkaila Tonee Floyd, who died Thursday evening at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center of injuries he sustained during a roadside bomb attack July 8 in Ramadi, Iraq.

The same attack took the lives of three of his fellow engineers, Staff Sgt. Omar Flores, Spc. Troy Linden and Spc. Joseph Micks, who were remembered in a service July 12.

“Once again we gather to pay tribute to a fallen hero,” said Capt. Brian Pugh, 54th rear detachment commander, who also oversaw the July 12 memorial. “We will never know why these four incredible people were taken from us.”

Having deployed with Floyd to Iraq in January 2003, Pugh described him as the type of soldier who, when faced with a difficult mission, “smiled, threw on his gear and motivated his peers to do the same.”

On active duty and stationed in Bamberg since 2002, Floyd was on his second yearlong deployment to Iraq, where he served as a squad leader and vehicle commander performing route clearance. He is survived by his sisters, Tokia Hampshire and Luzinka Vander, and his twin brother, Aljaila Floyd, who had flown from the States and were with him when he died.

Floyd’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Combat Action Badge and the Sapper tab.

Floyd’s death is the fifth the 54th has had to weather during its present deployment. The unit is scheduled to return to Germany sometime before Halloween.
