GRAFENWÖHR, Germany — Citing money and security concerns, the U.S. Army Garrison Grafenwöhr announced it will change the evening operating hours of four of its gates starting next month.

All but the post’s Gate 6 will be closed to vehicles after 9 p.m. starting Aug. 1, according to an e-mail sent Friday by the Grafenwöhr public affairs office.

“On a continuing basis, USAG Grafenwöhr in conjunction with military intelligence agencies and the local German authorities review the threat status to our community,” the e-mail stated. “In addition, the garrison balances these security needs against resources to ensure we remain fiscally responsible and continue to provide security to the community.”

The gate closures were based on the latest threat review, the e-mail said, but added: “There is no change to the overall threat status and there is no degradation to security by adopting these new gate access standards.”

Grafenwöhr public affairs referred further questions on Friday to Ed Wojtyna at U.S. Army Europe’s Office of Personnel Management. By deadline Monday, Wojtyna had not responded to phone calls or to an e-mail query.

USAG Grafenwöhr provided the following list of gate access times that will apply starting in August.

GATE 1: Inbound traffic from 6 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. weekdays; outbound traffic from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily; pedestrians-only the remainder of the time.GATE 3: Inbound and outbound from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily; closed the remainder of time.GATE 6 (by Grafenwöhr Army Airfield): No change, open 24 hours a day.GATE 9 (near Burger King): Inbound and outbound traffic from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily; pedestrians-only the remainder of the time.GATE 4 (Tanzfleck Gate): Inbound and outbound traffic from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily; closed the remainder of time.There are no changes to the gates at Vilseck.
