YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea — Local residents didn’t let a little rain ruin the Fourth of July celebration on Yongsan Garrison.

Hundreds were on hand, with umbrellas, to listen to live music, compete in various contests and celebrate a bit of Americana.

The light rain cleared up around mid-afternoon, just in time for a limbo contest. During the kids’ contest, Matt Meadows seemed to bend himself in half, barely sliding under the pole to snatch victory from Ryan Lattanzi, second place, and third-place finisher Tirzah Sheppard.

Moments later, it was the adults’ turn. The crowd laughed as Col. Ron Stephens, Area II commander and contest judge, kept strict watch and tossed the competitors who weren’t able to snake under the limbo pole.

Carlos Duarte, 19, wowed the crowd by opening his umbrella as he slid under the pole. But he couldn’t keep up with Dana Davenport, a limber 12-year-old who took first place.

The night concluded with an 8 p.m. concert by country recording artist Pam Tillis.
