The Central Criminal Court of Iraq convicted 11 detainees during a week in June for crimes including possession of illegal weapons and illegal border crossing.

The convictions took place from June 21 through Tuesday, according to a press release issued Sunday by the Multi-National Force-Iraq.

The trial court found Ra’oof Mesh’hen Hardan guilty of possession of illegal weapons and sentenced him to 15 years’ imprisonment. A search of his vehicle revealed 31 attached explosive rounds to be detonated by triggers on either the dashboard or the center console.

Salman Abdullah Mohammed was found guilty of possession of illegal weapons and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment. Two artillery shells, wire, and a phone base were found in his home.

Abdul Elah Abdul Jabbar Mahmoud was found guilty of illegal border crossing and sentenced to 10 years. The Syrian national was apprehended based on information he was a foreign fighter who smuggled people between Syria and Iraq.

The court also found Ibrahum Khalil Ghazaiy Awwad guilty of posession of illegal weapons and sentenced him to 10 years. He tried to evade a checkpoint and a search of his vehicle turned up seven 155 mm artillery shells, 60 120 mm artillery shells, and 12 boxes of 14.5 mm armor-piercing ammunition.

Jawad Murad Fahad was found guilty of possession of illegal weapons and sentenced to six years. A grenade, two-way radios, electrical wire, batteries, switches, a relay and goggles were found in his vehicle.

Mohammed Yassin Fadel Mohammed Al-Azzawi was found guilty of possession of illegal weapons and received six years’ imprisonment. He was apprehended with his two sons after a search of their house found three AK-47s, one PKC gun, a mortar sight, an RPG launcher, six RPG backpacks, 21 bayonets, two passports and four cell phones.

The sons’ charges were dropped after the prosecutor said the weapons were found at their father’s house.

Salim Abdul Hashim was found guilty of possession of illegal weapons and sentenced to six years. A search of his property yielded three AK-47s with ammunition, an 8 mm German sniper rife and a grenade.

Aref Saleh Zaid Abdullah was found guilty of illegal border crossing and sentenced to three years imprisonment. The Saudi Arabian national, caught in a raid, reportedly admitted illegally entering Iraq.

The court found Yasser Ibrahim Farhan guilty of possession of illegal weapons and sentenced him to a year in prison. He and two others reportedly set off an explosive and fired upon Coalition Forces. The two other individuals fled, and the defendant was found wounded with his AK-47 near an irrigation ditch.

Hilal Farhan Hadi was found guilty of possession of illegal weapons and sentenced to a year in prison. A weapons cache was reportedly found just outside his and two other people’s property lines. The charges against the other two defendants were dismissed.

The court found Hadi Dalaf Awad guilty of possession of illegal weapons and sentenced him to a year.

Coalition Forces discovered three modified Egyptian grenades, five blasting caps, one grenade, one AK-47, 200 loose rounds of AK-47 ammunition, and anti-Coalition Forces propaganda, including two videos showing Coalition Forces being attacked 30 meters from Awad’s house.

Upon conviction, all defendants are turned over to the Iraqi Corrections Service to serve their sentences.
