SEOUL — A U.S. military plane deployed chaff — small bits of foil, plastic or wire used as a radar countermeasure — during training on Monday, startling South Korea residents, according to the Yonhap News.
U.S. Forces Korea officials, contacted Tuesday, said they were aware of the Yonhap report but were unable to comment.
A U.S. -130 cargo plane dropped the chaff during a training mission over Yeongyang, North Gyeongsang Province, according to Yonhap.
The report quoted an anonymous military source as saying it wasn’t a technical problem.
“During routine training, the plane seemed to fire chaff at the wrong target at the wrong altitude,” the source was quoted as saying.
Local residents alerted police and military authorities, according to Yonhap, and there were no injuries or property damage
