SEOUL — Eight South Korean officers were awarded U.S. Army medals for their work in Afghanistan, according to the South Korean Ministry of National Defense.
The officers were dispatched to Afghanistan to work with a U.S. civil affairs brigade in a combined provincial reconstruction team from August 2005 to February 2006, according to the MND’s Web site.
The awards were:
Army Commendation Medal: Lt. Col. Yu Jae-gu and Maj. Choi Dae-jun.Army Achievement Medal: Maj. Kim Jung-gi, Capt. Jung Sung-hwan, Capt. O Je-cheun, Capt. Lee Won-jun, 1st Lt. Seol Chang-hun and 1st Lt. Hong Sung-chul.The officers were involved with 53 construction projects, from arranging bids and selecting contractors to supervising construction and holding groundbreaking ceremonies, according to the Web site.
The officers also provided education classes, including a contractor certification course.
