SEOUL — U.S. Embassy officials will hold a town hall meeting about bird flu in Daejeon on March 17.

The meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Taejeon Christian International School auditorium, next to Hannam University. Reservations are not required.

U.S. Navy gets awards for ’05 CFC participationYONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea — The U.S. Navy in South Korea received three awards for its participation in the 2005 Combined Federal Campaign during a ceremony Saturday at Yongsan Garrison.

Chief Petty Officer Luisa Santana accepted the award for U.S. Naval Forces Korea, Chief Petty Officer Leon Leath accepted for Chinhae Naval Base and Lt. Tim Walker accepted for the Navy elements with U.S. Forces Korea.

Sailors across the peninsula donated about $20,000 to the campaign.

Female S. Korean navy cadet graduates at top of classSEOUL — A female cadet made history this week as she graduated at the top of her class for the South Korean navy, according to South Korea’s Ministry of Defense.

Lt. Kang Kyeoung, 23, was commissioned Monday as a first class navy officer.

She also received a presidential award for having the highest record in the school, ahead of 163 colleagues.

Her father, Kang Hee-kag, is a navy colonel who graduated from the academy.

Rear Adm. James P. Wisecup, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Korea, was on hand for the graduation ceremony.
