An ill wind that brought destruction to Iwakuni has generated some goodwill on the part if Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni residents.

Lt. Cmdr. Alfonso J. Concha, the base’s command chaplain, will meet Monday with Iwakuni Mayor Katsuske Ihara and deliver $2,500 to support victims of Typhoon Nabi.

The Sept. 6 typhoon claimed three lives, according to previous newspaper reports.

The storm brought flooding, generated landslides, destroyed several houses, cut power to 4,000 homes, and prompted an evacuation of 700 people.

“This is a combined effort by everyone … the Roman Catholic and Protestant congregations … about 300 people," Concha said, adding that the base community is “willing to help in any way possible.”

“When something tragic like this happens,” said Master Sgt. Lesli J. Coakley, base spokeswoman, “clearly, it takes time for people to recover from damages.”

About a month after the typhoon, Ihara expressed his appreciation to base commander Col. Michael Dyer for the Marines who volunteered to help remove debris.

Dyer said in an Oct. 9 Stars and Stripes report that the Marines consider “Iwakuni city as part of our community.”
