Stone,measurement.
How much do you weigh?
If you’re American, you’ll answer in pounds. But in Britain, a pound is a measurement of worth, not of girth.
The stone is the imperial standard measurement for weight in Britain.
“Translating” between stone and pounds isn’t that difficult, as 14 pounds equals one stone.
And whereas the plural of stone is stones when dealing with rocks, the plural of stone as a measurement of weight is stone.
So, a 196-pound man weighs 14 stone.
But, what if the man weighs 200 pounds?
Well, you add pounds on top of the stones. That means a 200-pound man weighs 14 stone, 4 pounds.
As the British try to tackle the metric system, the government’s National Weights and Measurements Laboratory has a “cheat sheet” to convert from various imperial units to metric.
So if you’re ever forced to translate your weight into metric, just remember that each stone weighs 6.35029318 kilograms.
