Airman in custody after Okinawa accident

GINOWAN, Okinawa — An airman assigned to Kadena Air Base is in Okinawa police custody on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol in connection with a traffic accident early Sunday.

Okinawa police identified the airman as Tech. Sgt. Henry Anabwani, 28, assigned to the 18th Logistics Readiness Squadron.

According to the police report, Anabwani was driving north on Highway 58 in the Oyama district of Ginowan at 6:40 a.m. Sunday when he lost control of his car, careened over the median and struck a car in an oncoming lane. The 22-year-old Japanese driver and a passenger of the other car were treated for minor injuries, a police spokesman said. Anabwani was not injured, he said.

Police took the airman into custody at the scene of the accident. A Breathalyzer test showed he had a blood alcohol concentration level of 0.25 percent, .10 percent more than the Japanese legal limit of 0.15 percent, the police spokesman said.
