YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan — A USS Kitty Hawk sailor was in Japanese custody Tuesday after being involved in an automobile crash that left a 64-year-old Japanese national dead.
A Japanese ship repair facility worker at Yokosuka and his 8-year-old son also sustained minor injuries in the crash, Navy officials said. They were treated at released at a Japanese hospital.
The sailor, a petty officer second class, was not injured.
The names of the crash victims were not immediately available.
The three-car crash occurred about 10:30 p.m. Monday in the residential area of Mabori-Kaigan, about 5 miles south of the base, a Navy official said.
“It appears he did run a red light,” Seventh Fleet spokesman Commander Scott Gureck said.
Alcohol was not believed to have been a factor, Gureck said.
Japanese police were expected to decide Tuesday whether to turn the sailor over to U.S. custody.
