As many as 4,000 antiwar protesters are expected in Heidelberg, Germany, to form a human chain outside the Army’s Campbell Barracks on Saturday.
The rally will begin downtown at 2 p.m., and marchers will proceed to the barracks area.
Organizers have said the chain will wrap around Campbell and part of the Mark Twain Village military housing area.
The chain will break up and the crowd will gather in front of Campbell for speeches.
The military will close the main gate from noon to 6 p.m.
Heidelberg is the headquarters for U.S. Army Europe, and although the demonstration is supposed to be peaceful, the command is urging people to avoid those facilities if possible.
“From what I’ve been told, we’re not expecting any violence or anything like that,” USAREUR spokeswoman Marjorie Barrell said.
The Army has also warned of these other scheduled protests around Europe:
• Saturday — Melsele, Belgium, from 3 p.m. through the next day.• Sunday — Viareggio, Italy, from 1:30 p.m. until an unspecified time.• Thursday — Vicenza, Italy, from 8 p.m. until 10 p.m. All protests listed are to be outside the U.S. Army post’s gate No. 2.• March 8 — Camp Darby, Italy; time not available.
