FRANKFURT, July 5 (Stars and Stripes) — The fabulous Harlem Globetrotters played and clowned their way into the hearts of 3,500 people here last night as they defeated the New York Celtics, 52-46, on the German leg of their worldwide tour.
The Trotters, playing without the services of their clown prince Goose Tatum, who was called home due to the serious illness of his mother, and their ace dribbler, Marques Haynes, who has been ordered to report for a pre-induction physical, were still the Trotters with their full bag of hoop gyrations that continually amazed the crowd.
Bob (Rookie) Brown took over the clowning and kept the spectators roaring with laughter with his constant heckling of the officials and his sleight-of-hand motions with the basketball.
The Celtics, led by Ronnie McGilvray, ex-St, John’s star, and Tony Lavelli, former Yale great pressed the Harlem aces but could not keep pace with their basketball savvy and cage magic.
The Globetrotters will move to Stuttgart for an afternoon game at Stuttgart’s Century Stadium tomorrow. Their scheduled appearance at Nurnberg on Monday has been cancelled.
