In a city better known for ramen counters, sushi-go-rounds and izakayas, Yokosuka, Japan, quietly made history in 2015 when an unassuming Thai restaurant earned a coveted Michelin star.
Thai Erawan is a hidden gem that’s been serving authentic cuisine since 2001. The couple that owns the place are from the small town of Phitsanulok, Thailand.
I first ate here back in 2017, and the flavors have been remarkably consistent. I’ve tried almost everything on the menu, including the green curry (1,300 yen, or about $8.80) that earned the restaurant its Michelin star.
The dining room is cozy, with room for no more than 30 people, bathed in warm lighting and filled with wooden Thai décor. On busy nights, the space buzzes with a mix of Japanese locals and American military families.
The food isn’t just spicy, though it comes with a certain level of heat. Each dish has layers of flavor and texture.
On my most recent visit, my party started with our usual go-to order of spicy mango salad, pork barbecue and pad Thai.

The salad packs a kick, perfectly balanced by tart mango. The barbecue skewers blended sweet and savory, with just the right char. The noodles came with generous shrimp and chicken, topped with a dash of fish sauce and chili flakes for extra bite.
We did not order the green curry this time as I overestimated my appetite. We finished with a complimentary dessert from the owner – two small bowls of mochi, banana and tapioca in warm coconut milk.
Michelin stars are awarded for exceptional cooking, and most recipients are concentrated in Tokyo or other major food capitals. Thai Erawan’s recognition in 2015 was unusual due to its location, but only a few restaurants have earned the accolade.
And while the star isn’t listed in the most recent guides, the flavors and attention to detail that won the award remain. Nearly a decade after its Michelin nod, Thai Erawan continues to deliver a pleasant, filling and flavorful experience. One that has stood the test of time in Yokosuka’s ever-changing dining scene.
