Randy’s Donuts, a Los Angeles-based chain more popular in some quarters than Krispy Kreme, has at last landed in Tokyo.
Randy’s opened in May in the trendy Daikanyama section of Shibuya with a wide selection of delicious treats for sweet-toothed individuals. My family and I braved the long afternoon line for about 30 minutes on a sunny day.
Indoor and outdoor seating is available for 40, but we opted for takeout to avoid the crush. Kiosks provide numbered tickets for efficient service.
American flair spreads across the dining area’s walls, including photos of celebrity patrons. One such image depicts Robert Downey Jr. in an Iron Man suit sitting inside a Randy’s location.
Four menu categories and more than 40 types of doughnuts are available. Most selections exceed the size of a doughnut at many shops in Japan. The Texas glazed yeast, for example, measures 6 inches wide and appears on the premium menu at 550 yen, or about $3.80.
The cinnamon roll and apple fritter are a couple of my favorites from the same menu. They compare in size to the Texas glazed and are baked soft and chewy.
From the classic menu come glazed and cake varieties, some with sprinkles, for 360 yen. The deluxe menu offers flavored cake and yeast doughnuts, such as a cinnamon and sugar twist, for 480 yen.
Still more selections are available on the fancy menu, including a Japanese-influenced yeast doughnut with matcha icing, a new strawberry version and a maple long john with custard cream, which I did not skip while ordering.
Randy’s Rounds is a mixed set of four doughnuts in a large plastic cup for 620 yen.
Beverages include coffee, several flavors of tea, boba or tapioca pearl teas, milkshakes, smoothies, sodas and juices, starting at 450 yen.
I splurged and left with more than two dozen treats, including an acai berry smoothie, a pina colada lemonade and a strawberry milkshake. Randy’s T-shirts, hats, totes and other souvenirs are also available.
The sugar indulgence led to a full week of required fitness, but it was well worth it.
