Authentic Mexican cuisine is a rare find outside North America, but Que Rico comes as close as you’ll find in Pyeongtaek, South Korea.
Just a five-minute walk from Camp Humphreys’ walk-in gate, this colorful eatery adds to the flair with examples of various art styles displayed on its walls and even on the floor.
The menu is limited when compared to typical Mexican restaurants in America but features handmade breads and tortillas.
The enchiladas suizas (16,000 won, or about $12) arrives as three flour tortillas with grilled chicken, a spicy red sauce, melted cheese and onions. Warning: the sauce comes with a tremendous kick.
On a later visit, my party ordered two gringas and two carnitas tacos (15,000 won and 11,000 won, respectively).
The gringas are prepared al pastor over flour tortillas and topped with pineapple, melted cheese, onion, cilantro, salsa and lemon juice. The carnitas consist of pork stew meat over corn tortillas topped with onion, cilantro, salsa and lemon juice.
After that, I placed a to-go order for a torta Cubana, a sandwich filled with pork, sliced cheese, sausage, a sunny-side up egg, sliced bacon, melted cheese, onions, tomato and jalapeño. It cost 17,000 won.
Que Rico offers Jarritos, a classic Mexican soda sold in several flavors. Various Mexican and Korean beers are also available.
