I had wanted to go to Mama’s Streetfood Bar in Weiden for months, as the concept of creative comfort food made with care and fresh ingredients offered a welcome departure from the typical German staples.

Since I began following the restaurant on Facebook earlier this year, I’ve seen post for techno DJs, reggae nights, homemade desserts and iced teas laden with colorful fruit, and burgers that looked like something out of a magazine advertisement.

On a June evening, I finally made it to the unpretentious burger bar about 15 miles southeast of Tower Barracks, bringing along my wife and two kids.

Mama’s is just my kind of funky. Local entrepreneur Kati Hartwich opened the establishment last spring after operating a successful snack bar on Regensburger Street, she told Weiden 24 shortly before the opening.

Hartwich’s snack bar developed a strong reputation for burgers and fries. She moved into the brick-and-mortar shop in the bustling Lower Market because she wanted to test her creativity.

The theme is food that one might expect at a street fair, such as loaded fries, currywurst, fried chicken and grilled cheese, to name a few. Mama’s also offers vegan and vegetarian options.

The restaurant was warm and cozy and felt like an art gallery, with orbs of different sizes suspended from the ceiling and contemporary paintings on the walls.

The menu at Mama’s is heavy on good times, with lots of cocktails and fruity teas. The staple burgers and fries can be made a dozen different ways, and daily specials are offered.

I had to try Mama’s cheeseburger, which came loaded with lettuce, tomato, onions and pickles. I added fried onions and jalapenos for an extra 1.50 euros each, along with barbecue sauce.

It was the best burger I have ever had. The thick but juicy patty wore melted cheddar cheese like body paint. The bun was crispy around the edges yet soft and buttered, and the barbecue sauce was sweet and tangy.

I washed it down with a homemade iced tea, loaded with fruit and fresh mint.

My wife got a grilled cheese and grilled avocado combination off the specials menu. The bread was crispy and the cheese gooey inside. The grilled avocado, alongside an egg and salad, was light and healthy.

We split an order of Mexican fries, which came loaded with salsa, sour cream and guacamole. My son got a cheeseburger and plain fries as well.

We were all bursting from the meal, so no one dared dance with one of Mama’s homemade desserts, which enticed from a nearby pastry case. We’ll try that next time.

We all left with big smiles and bigger praise.

A sign says “Mama’s Streetfood Bar.”
