A Kaiserslautern man who has four rattlesnakes and 21 tarantulas in his apartment will be allowed to keep them, even though one of the snakes bit another man in the face earlier this month, city officials said Friday.

The bite left the man in a coma, though he is now responsive and out of intensive care, according to a police statement. An antivenom was flown from Munich to Kaiserslautern to treat him.

Veterinary and animal welfare authorities inspected the apartment of 34-year-old Steve Miller on Thursday and found only minor animal welfare issues, city officials said in response to questions.

Authorities ordered Miller to fix the issues they identified, and a follow-up inspection will be done, the city said.

While Rheinland-Pfalz has no law prohibiting the ownership of venomous or exotic animals, police are investigating the circumstances of the bite.
