Kaiserslautern faces fifth-division RSV Eintracht in first round of German cup action

A crowd of passionate football supporters in a stadium holding up numerous red and white striped scarves above their heads.

Fans hold up their team scarves during an 1. FC Kaiserslautern match. The Red Devils play the first round of the German cup on Sunday in Potsdam (X/1. FC Kaiserslautern)

On paper, 1. FC Kaiserslautern should score an easy win on Sunday when they play fifth-division RSV Eintracht in Potsdam, in the first round of the German cup.

But the cup writes its own stories, as the saying goes and many Goliaths from the Bundesliga’s top tiers have fallen to so-called Davids over the years. Bayern Munich losing to Weinheim and Vestenbergsreuth, Schalke and Dortmund being kicked out of the cup by Trier. Or fifth-division Ulm beating Nuremberg. The list goes on.

The Red Devils cannot afford to let their guard down. Especially since the offense has not got its motor running so far this season. In two league games, they only had two shots on target and only scored one goal on a penalty.

So maybe RSV Eintracht is the right opponent at the right time and coach Torsten Lieberknecht can get FCK running on all cylinders.

The nearly 3,500 Red Devils fans supporting their team in Potsdam are hoping the match will be the beginning of the road to Berlin, as in the 2023/24 competition, where the Red Devils finally fell in the final, losing 1-0 to Bundesliga champion Leverkusen.

The team returns to league action on Aug. 22 for a Friday evening game against neighboring Elversberg, and is back at Fritz Walter Stadium on Aug. 31, for a 1:30 p.m. match against SV Darmstadt 98.
