Lyme disease cases in Rheinland-Pfalz have jumped this year, with 643 infections reported from January to July, up from 386 during the same period in 2024, according to the state Office of Health and Social Affairs.

A mild winter has boosted tick activity in the Kaiserslautern Military Community, health officials said. Lyme disease — which is spread by tick bites — can harm joints, the nervous system and the heart if untreated.

There is no vaccine, but it can often be cured with antibiotics if caught. Symptoms include fever, chills, headache, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, muscle and joint pain, and a bullseye-shaped rash.

To reduce risk, wear long clothing and closed shoes and tuck pants into socks when outdoors. Check for ticks afterward, and use preventive veterinary care to protect pets.
