3 service members under investigation for illegal street racing

Three American service members from Ramstein Air Base and Baumholder are under investigation on suspicion of illegal street racing, police said.

They were caught Sunday on the autobahn A63 near Mainz, authorities in Kaiserslautern and Gau-Bickelheim said, adding that the drivers, ages 24-30, are “known in the racing scene.”

Two of them are assigned to the 86th Airlift Wing at Ramstein and the third is a member of the 44th Expeditionary Signal Battalion at U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz in Baumholder, the wing said in a statement Wednesday.

German police didn’t say how fast the three were driving or provide other details.
