American travelers in the Kaiserslautern Military Community who are leaving Germany should carry their passports, as border checks remain in place across much of the European Union.

Poland will temporarily reinstate controls with Germany and Lithuania starting Monday, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Tuesday. France, Austria, the Netherlands and Denmark are also conducting heightened checks, according to the European Commission’s website.

While travelers may face fewer restrictions entering Czechia, Switzerland, Luxembourg or Belgium, returning to Germany without proper documentation could cause delays.

Germany reintroduced its own border controls in September 2024 in response to irregular migration and smuggling, according to the site.

Re-entry measures in Germany are expected to remain in place through Sept. 15, while border policies in neighboring countries are expected to remain in effect through various dates into the fall.
