A 19-year-old U.S. airman who authorities say had a blood alcohol level of 0.24% tried to drive onto Vogelweh with damaged items from a nearby restaurant dragging from the car, according to a Kaiserslautern police statement.

Around midnight Wednesday at the McDonald’s on Im Harderwald in Einsiedlerhof, the airman proceeded through the closed exit lane of the drive-thru, which was blocked by a chain.

In the process, he ripped out a pole the chain was attached to, as well as the concrete foundation of the pole, the police statement said.

Security personnel stopped him when he tried to drive through the Vogelweh gate.

A breath test showed his blood alcohol content to be 0.24, according to police. The legal limit in Germany is 0.05 in most cases. But for drivers under 21, the limit is zero.

The airman’s driver’s license was revoked and he is facing criminal charges, according to Kaiserslautern police.

He was assigned to the 86th Airlift Wing at Ramstein Air Base, a spokeswoman for U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz said Friday.
