German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has invited President Donald Trump to visit his ancestral hometown of Kallstadt in Rheinland-Pfalz, Merz said Tuesday at an economic conference.

Merz said he extended the invitation during a phone call last week, offering to accompany Trump to the winemaking village in the Bad Dürkheim district, where Trump’s paternal grandparents were born.

Trump has not publicly responded. The invitation comes as Merz prepares for a trip to Washington to discuss NATO, Ukraine and trans-Atlantic security.

Kallstadt Mayor Thomas Jaworek said in November that a visit by Trump would be a “major challenge.” Still, he said he would be willing to show the president around the village, including the church where the president’s grandparents were baptized.
