Make the most of the first weekend in March with these exciting opportunities in the local area.

Fasching: The German Fasching celebration can be loosely compared to Mardi Gras, and the indulgent festivities begin this weekend! There will be parades in Birkenfeld, Merzalben, St. Wendel and Bitburg in addition to a themed market in Mannheim and festivals in Kaiserslautern and Enzweiler. Learn more about Fasching here.

DIY Sparkling Wine: Bubbly lovers can sample a dozen sparkling wines and the base wines from which they are derived while making their own bottle of sekt at Wilhelmshof Wine Estate in Siebeldingen Saturday at 10 a.m. Guests can learn about traditional production methods from a local vintner, enjoy almond-themed snacks, and take home their own bottle of handmade sparkling wine for 89 euros per person.

Homemade Craft Market: Browse handmade wares, discover one-of-a-kind gifts, and meet the local artisans who made them at the Ramstein Community Center’s Homemade Craft Market Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Winter Stargazing: If the sky is clear, join the Vulkaneifel Astronomical Association for an evening of stargazing at their observatory in Schalkenmehren Saturday at 8 p.m. The association will allow you to use their 11 high-powered telescopes to observe the wonders of the night sky and English-speaking “star guides” will be on hand to answer your questions. Admission is 10 euros per adult, while children and students can observe for free.
