The winning streak ended, but 1. FC Kaiserslautern’s unbeaten run continued following Saturday’s scoreless tie against Hannover 96.
After four straight wins, a victory would have catapulted FCK to the top of the second division standings following Cologne’s Friday evening loss.
The Red Devils got off to a good start in front of 45,779 spectators at Fritz Walter Stadium, when Marlon Ritter ran down a Hannover pass, but keeper Ron Robert Zieler was able to knock the shot out of bounds.
It was then Hannover’s turn to score, but FCK keeper Julian Krahl made the save.
It went back and forth for the rest of the game. Kaiserslautern had more ball possession, Hannover more shots on goal.
The guests had two good scoring chances late in the second half, with Krahl making the saves. The Red Devils had two opportunities in the five minutes of stoppage time, but Erik Wekesser and Maximilan Bauer could not covert.
The tie leaves Kaiserslautern in third place, with 39 points, behind Cologne with 40, and Hamburg also with 39. Only six points separate Cologne from Hannover, which fell to ninth with the tie, keeping everything tight in Bundesliga 2.
Kaiserslautern has a big game Friday night in Hamburg against HSV. With 12 games left to go in the season, an away win would be a good step towards a Bundesliga promotion and keep Hamburg at arm’s length.
The Red Devils return to Fritz Walter Stadium on March 1, for a 1 p.m. match against Regensburg.
