An American man faces a charge of manslaughter related to this death of his wife this summer, the Kaiserslautern public prosecutor’s office said Thursday.

Prosecutors allege that the man, 53, gained access to the home in Reichenbach-Steegen that the couple had shared and killed his wife on June 16.

The woman died from what officials called “violence to the neck.” Investigators said that a broken marriage was the motive.

The accused has maintained his right to remain silent, prosecutors said.

Kaiserslautern Regional Court must decide whether to open proceedings against the man, who remains in custody.

Neither the man nor his wife had any connection to the U.S. military, police said following the death, which occurred in a village about 6 miles north of Ramstein Air Base.

The accused remains anonymous under Germany’s strict privacy laws.
