Scheduled maintenance on the gas network between Mackenbach and Kaiserslautern, near Ramstein Air Base, will involve a controlled burn of residual gas on Thursday, energy company Creos said.

The work is expected to last several hours but have minimal impact. There may be some slowdowns on the L369 as a result, but gas supply in the area will not be affected. The procedure is expected to be completed within the day, Creos said.

Only small amounts of gas no longer viable for energy use will be burned off. This flaring ensures that the affected pipeline section is gas-free, allowing crews to work safely, according to the company.

Methane is more harmful as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, making the burn-off an environmentally safer option.
