Police are investigating two recent deaths in Kaiserslautern, both of which were announced Monday.

An 80-year-old man was found dead Monday in his apartment on Fliegerstrasse, according to a statement by Westpfalz police. A witness alerted authorities at around 11:30 a.m. after discovering the man unresponsive in his kitchen.

The circumstances remain unclear and a forensic examination has been ordered to determine whether foul play is involved. Specialists including forensic investigators were at the scene and an autopsy will be performed.

In the other case, a 20-year-old woman was found dead in her apartment on Pariser Strasse on Thursday, the Westpfalz Police Department said in a separate statement.

The circumstances of her death are suspicious, authorities said. A 20-year-old man who was briefly detained in Hesse on Friday in connection with the case was later released, according to police. Investigations are ongoing.
