A house on Steigstrasse in Kindsbach caught fire late last night, with the blaze breaking out around 10 p.m. for reasons yet unknown, Westpfalz Police said in a morning statement.

The fire quickly engulfed the first floor and the roof. One resident managed to escape unharmed. The building is now likely uninhabitable, with the ground floor also damaged by firefighting efforts, officials said in the statement.

Police estimate the damage to be at least in the six-figure range. The Kaiserslautern criminal investigators have taken over the investigation, and an expert is expected to examine the scene in the coming days to determine the cause of the fire.
