Two people were injured in a Saturday night car crash in Kaisersalutern (Westpfalz police )

An accident on Merkurstrasse in Kaiserslautern late on Saturday evening brought out the city’s emergency services, fire department and police, after a car overturned and slid down the embankment.

A 21-year-old man was driving from Merkurstrasse towards the Opelkreisel shortly before midnight, when he lost control of his vehicle. He first hit a sign with the right side of his BMW and then veered off the road to the left, where he broke through a construction site and a fence, causing the car to plunge down a slope about 33 feet towards a supermarket parking lot, overturning the car.

Rescue workers were able to free the driver and his 20-year-old passenger from the wreckage. The driver and passenger were injured and taken to the local hospital.

The damage is estimated at several tens of thousands of euros, according to the police, who are investigating the accident. Witnesses who observed the incident are asked to contact the police at 0631 369-2250.
