A 22-year-old airman resisted arrest following an alcohol-related crash on the A62 near Hütschenhausen on Tuesday afternoon, 52nd Fighter Wing officials said.

The driver, a senior airman assigned to the 52nd Civil Engineer Squadron, lost control of his vehicle around 3:30 p.m. while heading toward Pirmasens, officials said. A tow truck pulled the damaged vehicle from the scene, according to the police report.

The car veered off the road and ended up in the bushes with significant damage, according to .

Arriving police suspected the uninjured driver was under the influence of alcohol and attempted to take him to the station for a blood test.

The driver refused and became combative, police reported.

Despite being handcuffed, he continued to resist, trying to headbutt the officers while insulting them, according to a police statement. One officer suffered minor injuries during the struggle but was able to continue his duties.

U.S. military police responded to the scene, and the driver was initially detained by the German highway police. He had his blood drawn for alcohol level assessment at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and was evaluated for medical and mental health concerns, a spokeswoman for the wing told Stars and Stripes.

He was then released to U.S. military police for processing and eventually handed over to his unit’s first sergeant.

The airman was advised of his rights on Tuesday for further processing due to his level of intoxication, according to officials.

He now faces several charges, including driving under the influence, resisting arrest, assault, and insulting law enforcement officers, Westpfalz police said.
