1. FC Kaiserslautern pulled off an upset Saturday in Kiel, defeating Holstein 3-1. Kiel had won six straight games and had not allowed a goal in any of them. Kaiserslautern got on the board first with Daniel Hanslik scoring a header in the 13th minute. Kiel evened the score nine minutes later on a goal by Alexander Bernhardsson. Filip Kaloc put the Red Devils back in the lead with a left-footer in first-half stoppage time. The second half saw both teams trading scoring opportunities, but Marlon Ritter put the game away for FCK scoring the 3-1 in the 83rd minute. The win, along with Rostock’s loss to St. Pauli Friday night, let the Red Devils climb out of the relegation zone, at least until Sunday. A tie or win by Wiesbaden against Fürth tomorrow would drop them down to 16th, the relegation play-off spot. Kiel is in second behind St. Pauli, with good chances for a Bundesliga promotion. Kaiserslautern plays the 8:30 p.m. Saturday night game next week at Fritz Walter Stadium against Magdeburg. They then play in Berlin and end the season on the Betzenberg against Braunschweig.
