1. FC Kaiserslautern lost the first home game under new coach Friedhelm Funkel 4-0 against Karlsruhe SC, Saturday afternoon. Spectators at the sold-out Fritz Walter Stadium saw a scoreless first half, with the Red Devils showing a stable defense. After intermission, Karlsruhe got on the board on a goal by Marvin Wanitzek in the 51st minute, with Igor Matanovic upping the score five minutes later. Funkel brought in three fresh players, but it was FCK’s archrivals who scored. Paul Nebel finished a fast break in the 81st minute and Budu Zivzivadze netted a header for the 4-0 final score. With the loss, Kaiserslautern remains in 16th place ahead of Hansa Rostock, who play tomorrow. Next weekend the Red Devils head for the Baltic coast for a 1 p.m. Saturday match against Hansa. They return to Fritz Walter Stadium for a game against last-place Osnabrück at 1:30 p.m. on March 10.
