A faulty appliance likely caused an apartment fire in Mackenbach early Monday, Westpfalz police said. A 27-year-old resident made an emergency call upon noticing a fire in his attic apartment on Weilerbacher Strasse, after his smoke detector sounded at about 2:15 a.m., police said. Firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to other properties, according to police. The resident was treated for mild smoke inhalation. Weilerbacher Strasse was closed during the response. Estimated property damage is about 50,000 euros, police said.
