Madrid, Spain, Oct. 2, 1970: President Nixon and Spanish leader Generalissimo Francisco Franco are accompanied by Franco’s mounted escort as they ride from Madrid’s Barajas Airport to Moncloa Palace. A crowd of an estimated 1.5 million people greeted Nixon as he arrived in the city midway through a trip that also took him to Italy, Yugoslavia, Britain and Ireland.
