Stuttgart, Germany, Nov. 1, 1974: Gen. Alexander M. Haig talks with one of the guests at a ceremony marking his return to active duty as commander-in-chief of the U.S. European Command. Haig had served as chief of staff to Presidents Nixon and Ford, replacing H. R. Haldeman — of Watergate infamy — less than a month before Nixon’s resignation. When he left the Ford administration for EUCOM, he was replaced by Donald Rumsfeld. Haig served in the U.S. Army during both the Korean and Vietnam wars, retiring as a four-star general.
