Grafenwoehr, Germany, Apr. 9, 1949: Bakers at the Grafenwoehr Training Area bakery weigh and roll dough, creating perfectly uniform loaves.

A recently digitized set of images of Grafenwoehr Training Area, its facilities, services and buildings, provides a rare glimpse into the inner workings of and life on the sprawling training base in 1949.

Stars and Stripes photographer Gerald Waller’s vignettes of military life: soldiers checking out books from the Special Services Bookmobile, getting their Lucky Strikes at the local commissary; marching through mud and rain, and passing the time at a game of cards are believed to never have been published before.
