Gnjilane, Yugoslavia, June 15, 1999: As if they were entering a liberated city, a Marine Light Armored Vehicle crew rolled into Gnjilane in eastern Kosovo, with enthusiastic ethnic Albanians eager to see their arrival. Gnjilane was the principal city in the sector falling under U.S. responsibility and was eventually expected to become the headquarters for all U.S. forces in the region. The hope was that the KFOR peacekeeping force will ease tensions between the Serbs and Albanians.
