Sasebo, Japan, Nov. 22, 2005: Chloe Stevens is proud of her haul during a field trip to pick fresh mikans in orchards near Sasebo Naval Base’s Hario Housing Village. About 320 pupils from kindergarten through sixth grade from Jack N. Darby Elementary School visited orchards in shifts, with some picking 40 to 100 mikans to take home. The sweet and easy peeling citrus fruits, also known as the Japanese mandarin or satsuma mandarin, are a popular snack in Japan.
