Crew members and volunteer “scanners” talk over the six-hour search and rescue mission searching for the Flying Tiger Airline Super Constellation that disappeared over the Western Pacific Ocean March 16, 1962.

The missing plane — which was chartered by the U.S. Army — was transporting 96 military passengers and had 9 crew members on board. The crew pictured here after their return to Clark Air Base are (kneeling, from left) Capt. Theodore Stewart, 405th Fighter Wing pilot; Airman First Class James C. Johnson, crew chief; Airman Third Class Lawrence L. Clatchey, and Capt. Lawrence R. Brosy, copilot. Others are (from left) Airman Second Class Robert L. Jones, Airman Third Class Dennis Jones, Airman Third Class David K. Crausby and Airman Third Class Edward M. Raquel, assistant crew chief.

Pacific Stars and Stripes reporter Staff Sgt. Robert G. Fisher (not pictured) of the Philippines Bureau accompanied the search mission.
