Tokyo, Japan, Jan. 2, 1955: Cashier Tsuruko Iwasaki sells the last ticket to Corporal Raymond Somerfield. The Sunday 9 p.m. showing of the “Rear Window” on Jan. 2, 1955 was the last movie to be shown at the Ernie Pyle Theater.

The largest military theater is closing its doors after a 9-year run showcasing both movie and theater productions. The building will be returned to the Japanese government and eventually to the original owners.
