Tokyo, Japan, Oct. 3, 1955: General Lyman Louis “L.L.” Lemnitzer looks through some files in the Pacific Stars and Stripes library as librarian Toshi Tokunage looks on. Gen. Lemnitzer visited the paper’s offices at Hardy Barracks on its 10th anniversary, Oct. 3, 1955. Accompanying him were Col. Karl W. Scherer, U.S. Army Forces Far East (AFFE)/Eighth Army chief of information; Lt. Col. Joe B. Goodrich, Troop Information and Education (TI&E) executive officer, and Maj. Jean W. Hollstein, one of the general’s aides.
Toshi Cooper (nee Tokunaga) was Stars and Stripes Pacific’s librarian for decade, starting as the assistant librarian in 1948 but making herself quickly indispensable.
