Tokyo, Japan, Nov. 20, 1953: Japanese and American flags surround Vice President Richard M. Nixon and his wife, Thelma Catherine “Pat” Nixon, as enthusiastic Japanese children bid farewell to the U.S. goodwill envoy at Tokyo International Airport. The Nixons headed home after a five-day goodwill tour of Japan.
