West Berlin, West Germany, Feb. 1, 1983: Vice President George Bush signs autographs for a delighted crowd at the U.S. Command Berlin Sports Center. Bush had just made his first visit to the Berlin Wall, and called it “one of the cruelest existing realities of our time.” He added that having seen the infamous barrier, “I’ll never again take freedom for granted.” Six years later, during his presidency, the wall finally came down.
