Duhnen, West Germany, May 1960: A seagoing wagon train heads across shallow water for the island of Neuwerk, about six miles out to sea in northwestern Germany. When the tide of the so-called Wadden Sea was low enough for the markers showing the route (upper right) to be visible, trains of up to 37 wagons would carry tourists on the hour-long trek to the small island, population — then — 70. One can still reach the island this way now.
