Berlin, Germany, July 12, 1954: A little girl carefully approaches a white poodle standing on its hind legs under the watchful eye of her mother. Family members, guardians and even a dog were at Berlin’s Tempelhof airport to waive goodbye to their youngsters as they embarked on a summer vacation, courtesy of "Operation Kinderlift." The children were flown to West Germany to spend five weeks at either a summer camp or with one of the volunteer American or West German families.
