Chitose Air Base, Japan, Sept. 1957: Mary R. Birdsall, who teaches second and third grades at the Chitose Dependent School, checks the texts her pupils will begin using for the 1957-’58 school year. Some 380 dependent children of personnel stationed at the air base would enroll into one of the two schools for dependent children: the grade school at Chitose Air Base, for children in kindergarten through eighth grade, and the Crawford school at Crawford Housing Annex, 30 miles away.
