Checkpoint Sapper, Kosovo, July 8, 2000: Pfc. Ray Martinez, with Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 37th Regiment, finishes refueling an Army M1A1 tank. Sporadic violence in the Kosovo-Serbia provincial border region renewed concerns among soldiers that a small but growing ethnic Albanian guerilla group was provoking the Serbs to fight, a situation that could have drawn U.S. forces into the conflict and presented NATO officials with a political dilemma.
